Iranian Uprising, Twitter, and 9/11.

Following the events in Iran this weekend on Twitter in real-time has me thinking about 9/11. How would 9/11 have been different if we had Twitter? Wow.

Cities and Papers

Cities

Cities

Anberlin‘s album Cities is my favorite paper writing music.  It will probably always remind me of Sophmore year, when I spent many a night burning the midnight oil on the lounge computer writing papers, listening to Cities on the stereo.  I burned myself a copy to just leave in the lounge stereo, because I wrote papers in there so often.  I’d listen to it on repeat for hours–all night in some cases.  It was excellent.  It never got old.  You can’t say that about most albums.

Now it’s Senior year, and I’m writing my last real paper of my undergraduate career, and I’m back to listening to Cities.  I love this album.

Cool Websites – APOD

As a kind of altruistic sharing of the wealth kind of gesture, I’m informing you all of one of the coolest websites I’ve found: NASA’s “Astronomy Picture of the Day.” The site might look like it crawled out of 1999, but don’t be fooled! Every day they have awesome pictures of astronomy-related phenomena or just stuff, with a brief explanation. It’s consistently interesting.

Check it out here: APOD

Curse You, Jack Frost! Curse You!

Spring break is next week, and naturally, I want to do something awesome. So I decide that it would fulfill the requirements of awesome to take a different route home to Colorado for spring break. Instead of trudging through the tedium of Iowa and Nebraska, go north through Montana, and then go South, over the Beartooth Highway into Yellowstone National Park. Unfortunately, I have come to discover that Yellowstone closes for the “Winter” (apparently they didn’t get the memo that the first day of Spring is March 21st, because they apparently think Winter means “May 15th” poor deluded souls).
Turns out, basically every interesting National Park West of the Mississippi is closed for the winter. (Or at least the interesting parts are. Ex. Crater Lake National Park is open, but the road that goes up to the Crater Lake is closed.)
I think I’m gonna go South and camp at the Grand Canyon. (The North Rim–of course–is closed for the “Winter,” but the South Rim is still open. I think I’ll be able to deal with that.) Besides, then I’ll get to go to Antelope Canyon and Monument Valley too.
Except… I kinda want to go to Utah as well. Honestly, how awesome would it be to fly my kite on the Bonneville Salt Flats?

The Oscars

So Slumdog Millionaire pretty much owned the Oscars this year. (It had 8 the last time I checked, including Best Picture and Directing.) I’ll be needing to see that one of these days.

In other news, I’m glad Heath Ledger got his Oscar.

The Minneapolis Skyline

I went up by Hillside Cemetary tonight and took pictures of the Minneapolis skyline. Chilly on the shutter finger, but lots of fun.  If I can get I just got off work tomorrow, I want am going to go down to a little State Park just south of Red Wing and shoot some pictures.

Edit:

The weather was kind of gross today, so I decided not to go today.

Almonds vs. Walnuts

In a lucha libre match between an almond and a walnut, who would win?
I’d certainly be cheering for the almond… They’re infinitely superior to walnuts.
Walnuts have an undeniable size advantage, but almonds are small and are more aerodynamic, so they’re quick, which would be an advantage over the lumbering hulk that is the walnut.

Class Schedule – Spring 2009

My class schedule for this semester is mostly hit with a bit of miss.

Senior Seminar (M—- night) – Hit.

Christian Perspectives on Creation & Evolution (M-W– afternoons) – Miss.

Intro to Political Science (M-W-F mornings) – Hit.

Lifespan Development (T-Th mornings) – Hit.

Theological Debates (-T-Th- afternoons) – Hit.

There were several classes that I wanted to get into that were full. (I’m at the end of the line for registration, because I didn’t have AP credits or transfer credits, so I’m in one of the last credit brackets, and my last name starts with T, so I’m even at almost the end that!) But I’m optimistic overall.  The Creation / Evolution one is going to be a snoozer though…
